Can your business run without you?

It's the first question a buyer or successor will ask. Here's what they look for, and how to get there.

Why it matters

Whether you plan to sell, retire, or hand the business to family or your team, the business has to keep working when you step back. A business that depends on its owner for every answer is harder to sell and harder to hand off. Fixing that takes time, but none of it is complicated.

What buyers and successors look for

  • The business runs day to day without the owner.
  • Key processes are written down, so anyone on the team can find them.
  • The books are current, and business and personal finances are kept separate.
  • Someone besides the owner can make decisions, handle problems, and open and close.
  • Customers have relationships with the team, not only with the owner.
  • The tools and software are current, and the team actually uses them.

A quick self-check

Answer yes or no:

  1. Could you take two weeks off without your phone ringing?
  2. Are your key processes written down where your staff can find them?
  3. Can someone other than you approve a purchase or handle an upset customer?
  4. Are your books up to date and separate from your personal finances?
  5. Do your best customers know someone on your team by name?
  6. Do you know what software you pay for, and does anyone use it?

Each "no" is something to work on. Most owners have a few, and that's normal.

How long it takes

Getting a business ready usually takes one to three years. Starting early gives you more options. You can sell when the timing is right, hand off at your own pace, or stay on and simply step back.

Where Top Operations fits

We help owners put the pieces in place: document how the business runs, train the team to take on more, and clean up systems and tools. We work alongside your accountant, attorney, or broker, not in place of them. It starts with a private conversation about where things stand and what you want.
